Neuroscience and cognitive psychology studies have demonstrated that dual n-back training may increase fluid intelligence (IQ) and working memory (Soveri et al., 2017). Our app, N-Back Memory Training, implements the n-back task in a way that is both faithful to its use in the scientific literature and also fully customizable according to user preferences. As your working memory increases, and you advance to higher n-back levels, you can track your progress using highly customizable graphs. Track your performance trial-by-trial, via daily average scores, or daily high scores.
All of the gameplay settings are customizable. Change the game speed, the number of trials, the n-back level, and more. Simply go to Settings > Select Mode > Manual Mode. From there, you can customize virtually anything.
N-Back Memory Training uses an advanced scoring algorithm. The app gauges your working memory accuracy using the discrimination index A' from signal detection theory. A’ generally ranges from 0.5 (random guessing) to 1.0 (perfect accuracy). Values below 0.5 may indicate excessive guessing.
The N-Back Memory Training logo is a 3D rendering of the Montreal Neurological Institute's ICBM 152 standard brain atlas, used widely in neuroscience research. The default background depicts real neurons, along with their axons and dendrites. If you like, you can create your own custom app background using color gradients from within the Settings menu.
N-Back Memory Training is available for free on the Google Play Store. To remove ads and unlock the ability to compare your high scores with other users from around the world, upgrade to the premium version within the app for just $1.99 (or $0.99 in select countries).
N-Back Memory Training is available for download in any country that allows the Google Play Store. English is the app's default language, but basic translations are available for 10 additional languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, & Spanish).
The game progresses through a series of trials. On each trial, attempt to commit the current item to memory. Items can be...
As the trials progress, update your memory with new items and forget the old ones. You only need to remember n items for each n-back level. That is, for 2-back, you only need to remember the previous 2 items. For 3-back, you only need to remember the previous 3 items, etc.
Whenever the current item matches the item that occurred n trials ago, indicate a match by clicking a button at the bottom of the screen.
